Are you a Nerd or a Geek?

OK, if you are reading this blog you are probably a bit of a Nerd or a Geek.  Go on, admit it, you like cool gadgets and enjoy working with computers (most of the time … when they behave).

Well, if you have always wondered what the differences between a Nerd and a Geek is, the Venn Diagram below makes everything clear.

So based on this, I will have to admit to being a Geek and not a Nerd.

Here’s a question for you…

How many of you are the unofficial IT support person for your friends and family?

  1. Based on that Venn Diagram I am probably a Dork. I will not mention here that I am unofficial support person, because I worry the other Geeks in my family will use that against me next time they want something fixed!

  2. I am the family tech support for anything electronic. I don’t mind it, though. I enjoy computers that don’t work well. It gives me something to learn. 🙂 Of course, I do have a decent social aptitude, as well, so I’m less of a nerd/dork and more of a geek. Without the pocket protector, of course!

  3. My wife refers to me as the "Uber Geek" and yes , I am unofficial IT support to family and friends and anyone that finds out you have something to do with IT. You know how it goes at Dinner parties and other social occasions. "Oh , you work in IT do you?"…..Yes, "well I am having a problem with my PC do you know what it could be?"….. yes I’ll just pull out my IT support crystal ball..Ah hah yes here is the answer …switch it off and on again 🙂

  4. I have never considered myself a geek because computers are my job, not passion.  But according to that Venn Diagram I am a geek.
    I have been my family’s tech support for years, but my kids know not to ask me to fix things during the week.

  6. I want to say Geek as I AM the GO TO guy for all things computer related in my click. But… Because I take offense to the colors diagram in your chart, NERD would probably fit better!
    The colors are WRONG!
    The NERD space would be Black (well dark brown, as CMY colors do present a true black). Geek a bright green and DORK should be a bright orange. DWEEB is the closest, but should be a deeper purple color.

  10. The diagram is fine as far as it goes, but there are in-between combos, such as a geeky nerd and the nerdy geek and the Dorky Dweeb; and there’s hybrids such as the Gerd, the Derd, The Deek — and so on.  
    Also not mentioned are the auto-qualifiers, such as: anyone that wears a visor cap backwards is a full Dork irregardless of anything else; pocket protector earns one full Nerddom irregardless of anything else.  Anyone who is nostalgic about DOS gets is deemed with full Geekism irregardless of anything else.
    This is all too complicated and I don’t know what the heck I am; but I really really, really do miss DOS for its directness and neat, logical menus.  I guess that pretty much pegs me, but I don’t like it.

  13. No, I'm not the official or unofficial tech support for family — my brother takes care of that, luckily for me!  And I'm not sure I agree with your graphic describing these terms.  I've always thought of myself as a nerd, though I don't think I'm social awkward.  (Others may disagree!)  
    But that's OK.  I embrace my inner Nerdiness.

    I should add the disclaimer that I did not create the venn diagram.  I do think it is focussed towards those of us in the technology world.
