Friday Funny: Solution to Witches, Wands and Brooms Puzzle

David Meego - Click for blog homepageA couple of weeks ago I posted another one of those picture algebra maths puzzles. This time it was the Witches, Wands and Brooms Puzzle which had been doing the rounds on the Book of Face and the Interwebs in general.

If you have not had a go at solving the puzzle and registering your answer on the poll; Stop reading the solution, click on the link above and go do it now. 🙂

The puzzle image is shown below:

And here is the “initial” solution:

  1. There are three witches which total 45, so each witch is 15.
  2. There are three wands which total 21, so each wand is 7.
  3. There are three brooms which total 12, so each broom is 4.
  4. The final sum is 4 + 15 x 7.
  5. Doing Multiplication first gives 4 + 105.
  6. So the final answer is 109…… WRONG.

Look closer at the image and you will notice the following:

  • The witches on the top line are each holding both a wand and broom.
  • The middle broom on the third line is actually two brooms.
  • The wand in the final equation is actually two wands.

So let’s start again, with the correct solution:

  1. There are three laden witches which total 45, so each laden witch is 15.
  2. There are three wands which total 21, so each wand is 7.
  3. There are four brooms which total 12, so each broom is 3.
  4. Removing the wand and broom from a laden witch means each witch is 5.
  5. The final sum is 3 + 5 x (2×7) which equals 3 + 5 x 14.
  6. Doing the Multiplication first gives 3 + 70.
  7. So the final CORRECT answer is 73.

Where you observant? Did you get it right? At the time of posting the solution, only 38% of respondents on the poll were correct.

Keep safe, well and sane.

David
