Australian Business Register update breaks ABN Lookup Feature

David Meego - Click for blog homepageThis is a reposting of an article I originally wrote on my Developing for Dynamics GP blog.

Yesterday, on Thursday 16th June, the Australian Business Register (ABR) updated their website which meant the link that Microsoft Dynamics GP has been using to lookup Australian Business Numbers (ABN) no longer works. This morning, I had two support cases on this issue raised within about 30 minutes of each other.

Update: The Australian Business Register (ABR) team have added a URL redirection to allow the old URL to work. Microsoft will be looking to change the way the search is performed to use Web Services in a future release.

Unknown identifier ‘DYNAMICS’ or other Constant with GP 2010 SP1

David Meego - Click for blog homepageThis is a reposting of an article I originally wrote on my Developing for Dynamics GP blog.

Recently, we have been seeing some weird errors where previously working code fails to compile with an Unknown Identifier error referring to a constant in the core Dynamics.dic dictionary.

I came across this issue myself when preparing for the recent Technical Conference.

File not found: VBA6.dll error occurs or GP crashes

Beth Gardner - Click for blog homepageThis is a reposting of an article Beth Gardner originally wrote on my Developing for Dynamics GP blog.

This is a follow up to my previous post on the VBA6.dll not found error (for 64-bit). I have found this can occur on 32-bit computers and Microsoft Dynamics GP 10.0 and GP 2010.

[Edit] Re-installing the VBA 6.4 core components (as used by Dynamics GP) has been shown to resolve this issue for VBA6.DLL, VBE.DLL, VBA7.DLL and VBE7.DLL errors.  Please download the necessary files from this link:

How Disk Cleanup and Windows Update broke Microsoft Dynamics GP

David Meego - Click for blog homepageThis is a reposting of an article I originally wrote on my Developing for Dynamics GP blog.

Yesterday, I had a really interesting escalated case for a “Site Down” situation.

The story was that after installing the regular Windows Updates for Windows Server 2003 on their SQL Server machine, the customer rebooted to complete the update installation. When the server came back online, no-one could log into Microsoft Dynamics GP anymore.

We have been running into a few different issues with Microsoft Dynamics GP 10.0 and GP 2010 when you have Office 2010 installed.

[Edit] Re-installing the VBA 6.4 core components (as used by Dynamics GP) has been shown to resolve this issue for VBA6.DLL, VBE.DLL, VBA7.DLL and VBE7.DLL errors.  Please download the necessary files from this link:

Side-by-side configuration is incorrect error message given launching Dynamics GP

Patrick Roth - Click for blog homepageThis is a reposting of an article Patrick Roth originally wrote on my Developing for Dynamics GP blog.

It is somewhat coincidental that one of the system techs had a case Friday running into an error launching Dynamics GP 2010 and the release of Microsoft Dynamics GP 10.0 Service Pack 5.  What do these events have to do with each other?  Read on…

Microsoft Office Click-to-Run and Microsoft Dynamics GP

David Meego - Click for blog homepageThis is a reposting of an article I originally wrote on my Developing for Dynamics GP blog.

I recently had a support case where the customer was receiving the error “Unable to start Microsoft Excel.” from Microsoft Dynamics GP when trying to export from SmartList to Microsoft Office Excel.

Errors when importing Customization Maintenance Packages

David Meego - Click for blog homepageThis is a reposting of an article I originally wrote on my Developing for Dynamics GP blog.

Today, I had a support case that was asking about errors when importing a package via Customization Maintenance (Microsoft Dynamics GP >> Tools >> Customize >> Customization Maintenance).  The partner was unable to find an explanation of the errors on the Internet and so I thought I would explain what the errors mean and provide some best practices to avoid these issues in the future.

Could not load external ‘DexIsODBCsqlDriver@GPDWIN32.dll’

David Meego - Click for blog homepageThis is a reposting of an article I originally wrote on my Developing for Dynamics GP blog.

A little while ago I downloaded and installed the RTM (Released to Manufacturing) build of Microsoft Dynamics GP 2010. After installing GP and Dexterity I started on the process of updating my Dexterity projects to use the RTM build of Dynamics.dic (build 11.00.1247) and Dexterity (build 11.00.0218.000).

David Meego - Click for blog homepageThis is a reposting of an article I originally wrote on my Developing for Dynamics GP blog.

I have had two support cases with this issue recently.  So I thought I would post an explanation of the problem along with a script to fix it. The good news is that the underlying cause of the issue has been fixed in Microsoft Dynamics GP 2010 (v11.00).

Debugging ISV Application Crashing Dynamics

Patrick Roth - Click for blog homepageThis is a reposting of an article Patrick Roth originally wrote on my Developing for Dynamics GP blog.

I recently had a case that I thought I’d share with you. A well known ISV opened an incident with Developer Support to help solve an issue at their customer site.

This ISV has an application that encrypts certain sensitive data in the custom application in the ISV’s custom table in their own Dexterity based window.

The complaint given: After opening the custom window and making the application perform the decrypted data, when the window closes and the Dynamics navigation shell has focus – Dynamics GP crashes with the “Dynamics Runtime has encountered an error and needs to close..” dialog.

Running dag.exe on 9.0 Dynamics forms dictionary fails with runtime error at 86% complete

trick Roth - Click for blog homepageThis is a reposting of an article trick Roth originally wrote on my Developing for Dynamics GP blog.

A few months ago, a partner was attempting to create an Application.Dynamics.ModifiedForms.dll using the Dictionary Application Generator (dag.exe) against his 9.0 SP4 Dynamics forms dictionary.

This failed for him.  Trying to determine if it was a “forms dictionary issue” or not, he renamed his Application.Dynamics.dll as a test and attempted to generate a new one using Dag.exe.  This also failed in the same manner but at a different spot.

An open operation on table ‘[TEMP Table]’ errors

David Meego - Click for blog homepageThis is a reposting of an article I originally wrote on my Developing for Dynamics GP blog.

Sometimes Microsoft Dynamics GP reports unusual errors with temporary tables. Here are some example error messages that you might see:

An open operation on table ‘IV_Reconcile_PO_TEMP’ has an incorrect record length.

An open operation on table ‘PM_Inquiry_Summary_TEMP’ failed because the path does not exist.

Microsoft Dynamics GP and Illegal Characters Part 2

David Meego - Click for blog homepageThis is a reposting of an article I originally wrote on my Developing for Dynamics GP blog.

In the previous article in this series, Microsoft Dynamics GP and Illegal Characters Part 1, we discussed how string delimiter or terminator characters can cause issues and need to be handled correctly.  The article discussed the single quote (‘) and double quote (“) characters. Sometimes we have seen a single quote (‘) character cause problems at the SQL level when it is included in a data field and not handled correctly by the code.
